A walk along
the Miner’s Lane, to Week Down and Nattadon returning across fields to
Linden Spinney.
At the top of the drive turn
left and walk for about 30 yards to the next corner. To the right of the
gate facing you there is a stile.
Climb over the stile and take the track up the slope of the field.
In the second field you will see another stile in the hedge to your
left.
Climb over this and follow the narrow path along the side of a sloping,
rough field.
This will lead to a stream with the next stile on top of a wall, and you
will see the path leading on and up through woodland.
At the next stile turn right along the track. This is the Miner’s path
dating from the 14th Century. There were several open-cast tin
mines along this valley, and the miners walked to work along this lane
(among others!)
The Miners Lane will lead you through more woodland, a field, back into
a wooded lane and eventually onto the open land which is Week Down.
Keep to the path going up the slope with the hedge on your right until
you eventually meet the road. Turn right and follow the road along for
about 200 yards to the next open common, which is Nattadon Common.
At this point you can deviate if you wish and walk up the slope to your
left to the top of Nattadon Hill, (about 100 yards) where you will find a
lovely view looking down over Chagford, and out and away towards more of
Dartmoor. Then retrace your steps back to the road again.
Go through the gate by the cattle grid, and to your right you will see a
stile and a gate with a path across a (very untidy!) field to another gate
and stile. After this second gate and stile the path leads down across two
fields to a narrow path, though a gate and down a very steep path which
brings you back to the first stile of your walk and the road. Turn left at
the road and you will recognise where you are!
